Remembering the Miners’ Strike: 40th Anniversary Events

Some events commemorating the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike

Chesterfield

An exhibition called Community and Solidarity, commemorating the strike in North Derbyshire, will run from 4 March until 27 March, Monday to Saturday 10 until 4, in the Market Hall Assembly Rooms (above the Market Hall) Chesterfield S40 1AR. Several events will take place during that time. Free entry.

Saturday 9 March at 10.30 film: Dole Not Coal, featuring North Derbyshire strikers and their supporters, including Tony Benn and Dennis Skinner.

Friday March 15 at 1.30 talk: Reflections on the Miners’ Strike by Steve Brunt, a former striking miner.

Saturday March 16 at 1.30: North Derbyshire Women’s Action Group will show a film Not Just Tea and Sandwiches, followed by aconversation between two of the women activists.

Monday March 18 at 1.30 talk: Miners’ Strike: Background and Outcomes by Hilary Cave, who was NUM National Education Officer, heavily involved in the strike and a picket at Orgreave on June 18.

Durham

March 2 National Women Against Pit Closures (WAPC) is organising a national event, focusing on the work done by women during the strike. For details see their Facebook page.

Glossop

  1. Film: Still the Enemy Within at the Labour Club, 11-13 Chapel Street, SK13 8AT on March 27 at 7.30 pm (bar open from 7). The film mainly focuses on Yorkshire miners. The film will be followed by a Q and A session with Mike Simons, its executive producer. Tickets may be sold via Eventbrite, so please check the Club website for information before trying to book.
